Woods overcomes crash to claim fine 2nd place.
Plymouth Corinthians have kicked off their 2015 Road season is strong fashion led by Sam Woods from Ivybridge. Woods, who is embarking on his first full racing season, managed to overcome a crash in Sunday’s ‘Team Tor’ 4th category race at Paignton, to finish in a fine second place.
Woods attacked the bunch after half of the 45 minute event. However, with the adrenalin flowing, a clip of his pedal on a tight hairpin corner saw him hit the ground hard. With the bunch flying past, and Woods wallowing on the floor, his chances appeared to have slipped away but he impressively closed the 30 second gap to regain contact with 10 laps remaining. Meanwhile, Corries team mates Rob Cartlidge and Andy Flynn were riding strongly. Flynn, riding his first ever event, was finding his feet and made his own bid for glory with a lap to go only to be swallowed up by the increasingly frantic peloton. Woods though made a fantastic surge from 200 metres out to claim his second podium this year.
Combined performances will now see Woods upgraded to a 3rd category rider where he will be an important cog in the Corinthians 2015 Road roster.
In the 2nd& 3rd Category race, Martin Potter, Tom Moran and James Cartlidge flew the flag for Corinthians, with Moran and Cartlidge riding to 10th and 12th places respectively.
Next weekend sees Corries national age group champion Chris Scawn open his 2015 Time trialling campaign in the City Cycle Couriers 10 mile Time Trial at Ivybridge. Meanwhile, on the road scene, comeback rider Jon Ellis, who has been looking sharp in training, leads the team at the Primavera Road Race at Hatherleigh.
